What do you get when you combine 300 smiling students, a beautiful venue, a sold out audience of 800 seats and great singing and dancing? It is the annual Pardes all-school Chanukah show held at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.
Each year, the Pardes community comes together to celebrate Chanukah and enjoy a wonderful evening of students singing well-known songs with lyrics changed to retell the story of Chanukah. Every grade level from kindergarten through eighth performed a song and choreographed a routine. Previous years’ shows were Grease: A Chanukah Musical, Macca-bia (music of Mamma Mia) and The Magical Chanukah Mystery Tour (music of the Beatles). The most recent show, Jewsey Boys: The Story of Judah and the Maccabees, retold the story of Chanukah to the music from the Broadway hit Jersey Boys. The audience enjoyed seeing every grade from Kindergarten through eighth grade perform. The finale of Together We’ll be Strengthened, rewritten to the tune of the well-known song Who Loves You, showcased the dancing and tumbling abilities of several Pardes Middle School students and brought all 300 Pardes students back on stage singing and dancing. The energy in the theatre was contagious!
Families members and friends unable to attend the show have been able to enjoy it through live streaming. During our most recent show, over 110 people from all over the United States and around the world were able to be part of the Pardes community and enjoy the wonderful evening!
While several school districts around the state of Arizona have had the difficult challenge of cutting the arts programs in school, Pardes Jewish Day School understands the importance of providing opportunities for students to embrace the performing arts.
