Meet Receptionist Shannon Ostrowski

Q: Why did you choose to work at Pardes Jewish Day School?

A: My husband Jack Ostrowski has been talking about what a wonderful community Pardes has been for over 11 years now. I was happy when an opportunity opened up. I have friends who have been working here for a long time as well and they always have positive things to say about Pardes.

Q: What motivated you to become a teacher or to work in education?

A: I have always enjoyed working with children. I started babysitting at age 11 and then ran my own daycare from my home when I was 18. I come from a family of educators. My grandmother, mother and brother have all been in this field. This is my 17th year in education and first year not teaching. I ended up getting my degree in Early Childhood Education.

Q: What do you enjoy most about teaching or working in education?

A: I enjoy that each day brings a new challenge along with undeniable joy that involves children.

Q: What is the most important life lesson you want your students to learn in your class(es)?

A: “Being the smartest or the coolest or some other “est” will only take you so far. But being kind and generous and going out of your way to help others will matter in literally every aspect of your life for as long as you live.” ~Mommy Owl/Brain Power

Q: How do you keep current with the subject areas you cover?

A: I will always continue my education. I just completed another class through NAU in August. In education you can be inspired to learn new ideas and approaches on a daily basis.

Q: What was your favorite book as a child?

A: “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” – L. Frank Baum

Q: What is your favorite book as an adult?

A: “Ranch of Dreams” – Cleveland Emory

Q: What are some of your interests/hobbies?

A: Animals have been a passion of mine since I was a young child. I am involved in dog & cat rescue. That goes along with being a foster failure with most of them. I really enjoy traveling out of the country and in the United States. I like spending time with my family and friends. I also love any beach time I can get, along with hiking and being outdoors.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this school year?

A: I am looking forward to meeting new families and also seeing some children that I met through previous schools I have worked at.
